NSF ATP-Bio PUBLIC WEBINAR SERIES

Date:

Tue, June 17, 2025
15:00 pm

Justyna Jaskiewicz, DVM, Ph.D., and Rebecca Sandlin, Ph.D., will discuss their recent publication, Biopreserving Pathogens: Promise & Peril, that examines the benefits and risks of advanced biopreservation of pathogens. The article focuses on Cryptosporidium and Plasmodium, two pathogens that sicken millions of people each year.

Research on vaccines and therapeutics has been impacted by challenges in preserving and storing these pathogens. With rapid advancements in biopreservation technologies, the development of effective interventions may now be streamlined. However, the authors caution that consideration of legal and ethical strategies are essential to mitigate the risks associated with the long-term storage of pathogens, such as accidental or intentional release to the public.

The article was one of ten, authored by a team of researchers, featured as part of the symposium, Emerging Technologies to Stop Biological Time: The Ethical, Legal & Policy Challenges of Advanced Biopreservation, in the Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics.

This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. EEC
