ETHICS AND PUBLIC POLICY

Mission

The mission of the Ethics & Public Policy (EPP) component at ATP-Bio is to ensure that the development and deployment of biopreservation technologies are guided by rigorous ethical, legal, and societal analysis. EPP aims to support ATP-Bio’s innovation through responsible research practices that prioritize public benefit.

Vision

EPP envisions a research ecosystem where ethical and policy considerations are deeply integrated into every stage of technology development, ensuring that ATP-Bio’s scientific advancements serve the public good, anticipate societal impacts, and earn public trust.

Strategy

EPP operates through the University of Minnesota’s Consortium on Law and Values in Health, Environment & the Life Sciences, and partners with ATP-Bio researchers and the Ethics & Public Policy Panel (EP3), a group of national multidisciplinary experts. The strategy includes:

  • Collaborating across disciplines and institutions to identify and address ethical, legal, and societal issues (ELSI) tied to ATP-Bio’s research and applications
  • Contributing to the NSF Stakeholder Engagement & Impact Collaborative (SEIC) with other Gen-4 ERCs
  • Leading the NSF-funded NetEthics project to explore the ethical challenges of complex engineering research networks

Goals

  • Analyze ethics and policy challenges in ATP-Bio research and applications
  • Identify and assess ELSI concerns
  • Collaborate internally and externally on ELSI research
  • Advance ethical development and deployment of ATP-Bio technologies
  • Conduct forward-looking ELSI analysis
  • Produce and disseminate ethics and policy publications
  • Engage ATP-Bio investigators and trainees in ethical inquiry
  • Host events and provide access to ethics and policy resources
  • Collaborate on research projects and publications
  • Contribute to the NSF SEIC initiative
  • Work with other Gen-4 ERCs to enhance stakeholder engagement and societal impact
  • Lead the NetEthics project
  • Examine ethical challenges in engineering research centers
  • Develop tools to support ethics and responsible conduct of research (RCR) across networks
