SUMMARY:CRYO2025
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT CRYO2025\nThe Society for Cryobiology‘s annual CRYO meeting is the world’s premier meeting devoted to all aspects of low temperature biology and medicine\, comprising both the fundamental science of ice formation as well as branching into niche sub-disciplines. \nCRYO2025 marks the Society for Cryobiology’s first return to Germany since CRYO2006 held in Hamburg. \nCRYO2025 heralds a number of exciting changes: \nCRYO2025 heralds a number of exciting changes: \n\nA plenary focussed program of broad category themes – e.g. Cooling/Warming Technologies\, Biomedical Engineering\, Complex Organs and Organisms\, and much more\nA return to a 4-day meeting\, allowing additional time for social and networking activities\nAn all-inclusive registration fee which includes the conference banquet\nOpportunity for pre-meeting local lab tours\n\nABOUT THE SOCIETY FOR CRYOBIOLOGY\nThe Society for Cryobiology was founded in 1964 to bring together those from the biological\, medical and physical sciences who have a common interest in the effect of low temperatures on biological systems. The purpose of the Society is to promote scientific research in low temperature biology\, to improve scientific understanding in this field\, and to disseminate and apply this knowledge to the benefit of mankind. The Society for Cryobiology publishes its signature journal Cryobiology in conjunction with Elsevier.  \nThe Society for Cryobiology welcomes membership applications from students and individuals involved in cryobiology research in industry\, academia\, government\, and non-profit organizations. Membership benefits include access to Cryobiology online\, reduced annual meeting registration\, opportunities for involvement in committees\, governance\, and more. \nTo access member pricing as displayed on the registration dropdown join the Society for Cryobiology today.

SUMMARY:ATP-Bio Public Webinar Series: Dr. Robert Montgomery
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, Robert Montgomery\, MD\, PhD\, the H. Leon Pachter\, MD\, Professor of Surgery at NYU Langone\, has pioneered advances to make organ transplants more readily available to patients who need them. Among his pioneering innovations are for example (i) domino kidney transplants—in which multiple living-donor kidneys are swapped so each recipient receives a compatible organ\, (ii) the safe use of organs that test positive for hepatitis C\, (iii) using organs from other species – xenotransplantation – to help fill vast gaps in organ supply and (iv) development and application of the paradigm changing decedent model – brain dead human donors as a targeted testbed for key medical treatments. For these breakthroughs\, Dr. Montgomery\, who is also chair of the Department of Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine\, received the prestigious 2024 Jacobson Innovation Award from the American College of Surgeons. \nDr. Montgomery knows personally all too well about the constraints and gaps in the current transplant ecosystem system having died and been revived multiple times before receiving a heart transplant. He also personally has experienced about the life saving and changing gift of organ donation that enabled him to receive a new heart. \nIn this designated guest talk and fireside chat Dr. Montgomery will briefly share (i) how the true need for organ transplantation is significantly larger than what waitlist statistics suggest and (ii) his thoughts on the potential of Xeno translation near and medium term\, and then (iii) in more depth\, discuss pioneering “decedent model” and (iv) how it can help accelerate and transform transplantation\, including organ preservation advances and potentially medicine more broadly. \n  \nZOOM LINK \n  \n \nDr. Robert Montgomery\nMD\, DPhil\, FACS\nH. Leon Pachter Chair and Professor of Surgery\nDirector\, NYU Langone Transplant Institute\nThe decedent model: A new paradigm for accelerate need lifesaving biomedical innovation and de-risking high stakes clinical trials \nDr. Robert A. Montgomery is Chair of Surgery and Director of the Transplant Institute at NYU Langone Health. A pioneer in transplantation\, he developed laparoscopic live kidney donation\, the Domino Paired Donation protocol\, and xenotransplanation. A National Academy of Medicine member\, he has published over 325 articles and received numerous honors\, including the 2022 Liberty Science Center Genius Award\, Newsweek’s America’s Greatest Disruptors\, and Ukraine’s Order of Merit for humanitarian efforts.

SUMMARY:NSF ATP-Bio PUBLIC WEBINAR SERIES
DESCRIPTION:Justyna Jaskiewicz\, DVM\, Ph.D.\, and Rebecca Sandlin\, Ph.D.\, will discuss their recent publication\, Biopreserving Pathogens: Promise & Peril\, that examines the benefits and risks of advanced biopreservation of pathogens. The article focuses on Cryptosporidium and Plasmodium\, two pathogens that sicken millions of people each year. \nResearch on vaccines and therapeutics has been impacted by challenges in preserving and storing these pathogens. With rapid advancements in biopreservation technologies\, the development of effective interventions may now be streamlined. However\, the authors caution that consideration of legal and ethical strategies are essential to mitigate the risks associated with the long-term storage of pathogens\, such as accidental or intentional release to the public. \nThe article was one of ten\, authored by a team of researchers\, featured as part of the symposium\, Emerging Technologies to Stop Biological Time: The Ethical\, Legal & Policy Challenges of Advanced Biopreservation\, in the Journal of Law\, Medicine & Ethics. \nThis material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. EEC \n  \nZOOM LINK \n  \n \n
