SUMMARY:NSF ATP-Bio & EARTH Joint Public Webinar featuring Dr. John Bischof & Dr. Mark Shiflett
DESCRIPTION:Improved Refrigeration for Next Generation Cryopreservation\nTuesday\, October 13\, 2026 \n3:00 PM – 4:00 PM CT | 4:00 – 5:00 PM ET | 1:00 – 2:00 PM PT \nFeaturing: Dr. John Bischof (ATP-Bio) & Dr. Mark Shiflett (EARTH) \nZoom Link \n \nAbstract \nAdvances in low-temperature biology are revolutionizing the preservation of biological systems across multiple scales (µL to 2L). The NSF Engineering Research Center ATP-Bio is developing both subzero and cryogenic preservation protocols using defined testbeds that serve as both model systems for technology development and final products for real-world applications. Achieving these goals requires high-efficiency\, environment-safe refrigeration systems. By integrating the advanced\, environmentally friendly refrigeration technologies developed by the NSF ERC EARTH\, ATP-Bio enhances its ability to design and construct optimized prototype systems for organ and tissue cryopreservation. Together\, this collaboration aims to deliver “off-the-shelf” biopreservation approaches to enable cell therapies\, transplantable tissues and organs\, organoids for biopharma\, organismal models\, and “cryo-seed” preservation for agriculture and biodiversity. By translating and commercializing these combined technologies to build scalable cryo-supply chains\, ATP-Bio and EARTH are creating transformative societal benefits\, establishing a robust global infrastructure\, and securing United States leadership in “stopping biological time.” \nAs a first step this presentation will highlight a program between the two NSF ERCs – EARTH and ATP-Bio to design and construct a prototype system for cryopreservation of organs and tissues.

SUMMARY:NSF ATP-Bio & EARTH Joint Public Webinar featuring Dr. Jason Acker and Dr. Robert Ben
DESCRIPTION:Improved Refrigeration for Next Generation Cryopreservation\nTuesday\, October 20\, 2026 \n3:00 PM – 4:00 PM CT | 4:00 – 5:00 PM ET | 1:00 – 2:00 PM PT \nFeaturing: Dr. Jason Acker and Dr. Robert Ben \nZoom Link \n \n  \nDelivering Improved Cryoprotection: The PanTHERA Story \nThis presentation details the discovery\, development\, and clinical impact of PanTHERA CryoSolutions’ novel Ice Recrystallization Inhibitor (IRI) technology. Inspired by biological antifreeze mechanisms\, PanTHERA’s small-molecule platform prevents ice recrystallization—the damaging growth and coalescence of ice crystals during cryopreservation\, cold storage\, and thawing. By controlling ice crystal size\, IRI technology addresses critical bottlenecks in cell-based therapy manufacturing and delivery. \nIncorporating IRIs into cryopreservation protocols significantly enhances post-thaw cell recovery\, structural integrity\, and therapeutic efficacy across sensitive cell types\, including stem cells and immune therapies. Crucially\, this platform mitigates the cell toxicity associated with traditional cryoprotective agents like dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) by allowing much lower concentrations to be used effectively. Furthermore\, IRIs shield cellular products from damage caused by transient thermal fluctuations during handling\, shipping\, and biobanking. Ultimately\, by enabling higher sub-zero storage temperatures and reducing reliance on liquid nitrogen infrastructure\, PanTHERA’s platform streamlines cold-chain logistics and improves global access to advanced cellular therapies.

SUMMARY:Frontiers in Synthetic Biology: SpudCells\, Mirror Life & Societal Implications
DESCRIPTION:Revolutionary advances in cell engineering and synthetic biology offer enormous potential benefits\, while raising vexing ethical and policy issues. A team at the University of Minnesota has developed SpudCell — the first synthetic cell that can grow and reproduce\, built from non-living chemicals. Scientists at Stanford and Arc Institute recently published on their successful use of AI to design new virus genomes. However\, scientists have cautioned against creating organisms with molecules that are the mirror image of the biological components of known life\, as existing organisms would have no immune defenses. Join three experts on synthetic biology\, biosecurity\, and bioethics to explore how to realize the promise of synthetic biology while controlling potential risks. \nThe webinar is free and open to the public. Note that any opinions\, findings\, and conclusions or recommendations expressed are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Consortium on Law and Values. \nContact consortm@umn.edu with questions. \nFor full details and information how to register click HERE
