SUMMARY:Frontier Issues in Organ Transplantation: New Approaches to Saving Lives & Securing Trust
DESCRIPTION:Frontier Issues in Organ Transplantation: New Approaches to Saving Lives & Securing Trust\nOn Thursday\, June 25\, the Consortium on Law & Values at the University of Minnesota is hosting Frontier Issues in Organ Transplantation: New Approaches to Saving Lives & Securing Trust\, a free online lecture focused on emerging technologies and a changing landscape impacting and shaping the future of organ transplantation. \nLive Webinar on Zoom \nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n  \n \nOrgan transplantation is at a crossroads. Too many people die for lack of an organ. Confidence in the U.S. transplant system has been shaken. Join three top experts to debate what comes next! Will new technologies save lives — perfusion options\, xenotransplantation\, and prolonged organ cryopreservation? Will reorganizing the transplant system and modernizing the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) solidify public trust? \nThis webinar will explore the future of organ transplantation. The webinar is free and open to the public. It is co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Research Center for Advanced Technologies for the Preservation of Biological Systems (ATP-Bio) (grant no. EEC 1941543). Any opinions\, findings\, and conclusions or recommendations expressed are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views of NSF or the Consortium on Law and Values. \nClick here for full details.

SUMMARY:Society for Cryobiology: The Passive Lunar Cryorepository Project
DESCRIPTION:Could the Moon become a backup drive for life on Earth?\nYou’ve heard about plans for a lunar biobank\, but what would it actually take to preserve Earth’s biodiversity off-world? \nSpeakers Mary Hagedorn (Smithsonian Institution and ATP-Bio SAB Member)\, Heath Mills (Rhodium Scientific)\, and  Garret Fitzpatrick (Center for Astrophysics\, Harvard University) will discuss an overview of the proposed project before diving deeper into engineering aspects of the lunar mission and the effects of spaceflight on preservation of different cell types and related logistical considerations. \nREGISTER NOW\n \nATP-Bio’s work in biopreservation is reaching beyond Earth \nWe encourage the cryo-community to attend and share the Society for Cryobiology webinar\, “The Passive Lunar Cryorepository Project\,” on Wednesday\, September 23 at 12:00 p.m. CT. \nThe webinar is especially relevant to ATP-Bio’s growing impact in biodiversity preservation. NSF supplemental funding is supporting ATP-Bio investigator Mary Hagedorn’s project\, “Building Space-Ready Biopreservation Technologies: Validating Cryopreservation Under Real Space Conditions Using the International Space Station National Laboratory.” This work is helping advance technologies needed to preserve Earth’s biodiversity under the unique conditions of space and supports the broader vision of a lunar biorepository. \nDuring the webinar\, Mary Hagedorn\, Garret Fitzpatrick\, and Heath Mills will explore the scientific\, engineering\, and logistical challenges involved in making a lunar biorepository a reality—including the provocative question: Could the Moon become a backup for life on Earth? \nPlease consider attending and help amplify this event by sharing it with trainees\, students\, faculty\, colleagues\, industry partners\, and professional networks who may be interested in cryobiology\, biodiversity preservation\, space science\, and biopreservation. \n \n\n\nNSF ATP-Bio is an Engineering Research Center – Grant No. EEC 1941543

SUMMARY:Frontiers in Synthetic Biology: SpudCells\, Mirror Life & Societal Implications
DESCRIPTION:Revolutionary advances in cell engineering and synthetic biology offer enormous potential benefits\, while raising vexing ethical and policy issues. A team at the University of Minnesota has developed SpudCell — the first synthetic cell that can grow and reproduce\, built from non-living chemicals. Scientists at Stanford and Arc Institute recently published on their successful use of AI to design new virus genomes. However\, scientists have cautioned against creating organisms with molecules that are the mirror image of the biological components of known life\, as existing organisms would have no immune defenses. Join three experts on synthetic biology\, biosecurity\, and bioethics to explore how to realize the promise of synthetic biology while controlling potential risks. \nThe webinar is free and open to the public. Note that any opinions\, findings\, and conclusions or recommendations expressed are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Consortium on Law and Values. \nContact consortm@umn.edu with questions. \nFor full details and information how to register click HERE
